Easy Color Blocking with Digital Paint!
The inspiration for this layout came from the stunning mixed-media paint element in the Our Story Matters kit. I was immediately drawn to the bold and bright brush strokes and knew they would make a dynamic background for my project. The variety of colors in the paint element offered the perfect opportunity to experiment with color blocking, allowing me to create a cohesive and visually striking layout.
After printing the paintbrush stroke element as my background, I adhered it to a full-size piece of patterned paper from the collection. This added a bold contrast and framed the design beautifully. With my background set, the next step was selecting papers and embellishments that matched each of the colors within the brush strokes.
To start, I printed and cut out the different ribbon elements included in the collection. Then, I carefully chose patterned papers that adhered to a tone-on-tone print for each color section, ensuring a harmonious look. To add texture and variety, I used an assortment of border punches on the patterned paper strips, giving them unique edges that added extra dimension to the layout.
Once the paper strips were in place, I layered on my photos, positioning them strategically across the layout. With the foundation set, I moved on to embellishing, selecting decorations that corresponded with each color section to reinforce the color-blocking effect.
While the majority of the embellishments matched the coordinating paint strokes in the background, I also incorporated florals throughout the layout. I decided to add my title to this blue paper card element using the black & white alpha that is in the collection.
The color-blocking approach made assembling the layout quick and easy. By pulling out monochromatic embellishments and placing them directly onto the matching paint strip, I was able to maintain a clean and organized aesthetic. To create depth and visual interest, I secured some elements directly onto the page, while others were adhered with foam tape to introduce subtle dimension.
Since florals are a key feature of this collection, I decided to cluster them around my photos. This not only helped to tie all the colors together but also guided the viewer's eye smoothly across the page, ensuring a balanced composition.
The ribbon elements included in the collection added an extra layer of texture and visual interest to each color section. By implementing color blocking, I was able to seamlessly incorporate a diverse mix of patterns and embellishments without the design feeling cluttered or overwhelming. This technique allowed each element to shine while maintaining a cohesive and balanced look.
To complete the layout, I finished with black iridescent spatters and sequins, adding just the right amount of sparkle and contrast.
I truly enjoyed creating this vibrant and structured layout, and I hope it inspires you to explore color blocking in your own projects. Thank you so much for joining me today—I can't wait to see what you create!
