Back to Basics - 3 Ways to Use Digital Scrapbooking Products for a 12x12 Layout Without a Large Printer
Hello and welcome to the Traci Reed Blog. Last time I appeared on the blog I showed you three simple ways to use Photoshop to alter digital journaling cards.
Today I am yet again going back to basics and showing you how to create a 12x12 scrapbook layout with digital products. I know that it can be a challenge if you don’t have a large-format printer. But don’t worry—there are easy ways to bring your digital designs to life! Here are three creative approaches:
1. Use an 8.5x11 Printer and Assemble the Layout in Sections
Divide your layout into four 6x6 sections or three 4x12 strips using editing software like Photoshop or Canva. Print each section on standard 8.5x11 or A4 paper, trim them to size, and piece them together on a 12x12 background. This method allows you to print each section with detail, then assemble them like a puzzle for a seamless, vibrant final look.
2. Create Mini Clusters and Print Smaller Elements
Rather than printing the whole layout, design smaller clusters of elements and photos on a letter-size canvas. Cut out these pieces and arrange them on a 12x12 sheet of cardstock to form your layout. This method gives you freedom to move pieces around until you find the perfect arrangement, and is how I do 99% of my hybrid layouts.
You will see in this layout how everything from the background, to the 12 x 12 backing paper was actually printed on 8.5x11 paper.

3. Use a Printing Service to Print Large Photos, Papers or Digital Layouts
Many local and online printing services offer 12x12 printing options for a single photo or even entire layouts. Traci has a few tutorials on her Youtube channel outlining how to print digital products using a printing service. This approach allows you to print larger elements like backgrounds, photos, or entire layouts in one piece without size limitations. Just upload your design to the printing service, and they’ll take care of the rest!
I don’t have an example of me using the I Voted collection, but here is an example of an entirely digital layout I created using the Radiate Joy collection which was a freebie from Traci earlier in the year. I printed it out slightly smaller than 12x12 and then matted it on matching coloured cardstock.
By using these techniques, you can achieve beautiful 12x12 layouts without needing a large-format printer. Happy crafting!
