December of Memories 2021: Using Cut Files on your Digital Pages!

Cut files are designed digitally for use with a cutting machine like a Silhouette or Cricut. Most cut files come with a PNG file, and they can be used just like any other digital embellishment available in digital scrapbooking products.

or this layout using The Naughty List, I started out with the Holiday Garland cut file by Paige Evans and completely backed the file before continuing to position my images and other embellishments. The link to the cut file I’ve used is in the description box of the process video.

Here are the steps I took to back the cut file. You can watch the video or you can follow the steps below.

NOTE: There is a free action that will take you through these steps. The download link is in the description box of the YouTube video or you can download it HERE

  1. Select the cut file in your layers panel.

  2. Choose the Magic Wand Tool from the tool bar.

  3. Click in the open space on the cut file that you want to fill with paper.

  4. Once you see the “marching ants,” choose SELECT > MODIFY > EXPAND. You should be good choosing between 4 and 15 pixels. You just want to be sure that the cut file covers the edges of your selection.

  5. At the bottom of your layers panel, click on the round icon to create a fill or adjustment layer and then choose SOLID PAPER. Press OK.

  6. Right click on the Color Fill layer that you just created, and select CONVERT TO SMART OBJECT.

  7. Right click on the Color Fill layer again and select RASTERIZE LAYER.

  8. Your final step is to move the Color Fill layer below your cut file layer, and then clip your desired paper to the shape.
