Tutorial: Clipping Masks + Text Paths in Photoshop

I had this layout in mind for my nephew’s wedding at Aulani Disney Resort in Oahu but in order to achieve it, I needed to use a couple simple but effective photoshop skills: clipping masks (for the ears) and text paths (for the journaling!

You can watch the tutorial/process video below and I’ve outlined the steps too!

Video Tutorial and Process

I used the monstera leaves from the Island Time collection to make these ears and clipped the solids from the Fierce collection to each leaf to change the colors.

To clip one object to another, make sure the object you want to take the shape of the second object (in this case solid paper) is directly on top of the second object’s layer (in this case the monstera leaf) in the layers palette and then the keyboard command is CTRL + ALT + G for Windows or CMD + OPT + G for Mac

For the text path, use the shape tool set to “path” instead of shape in the top tool bar to draw the shape you want your path to be. You can also freehand this with the pen tool.

Using the “text on a path” tool with your text set to left justified, click where you’d like your text to start on the path and then type to add your text.

That’s it! Two pro-tips you can add to any layout!
