Style Class: Tips for Creating a Minimalist Album by Tracie using the Weekender Collection
Hi everyone! I’m Tracie and I’m going to talk about my minimalist digital travel album today.
The current book I’m working on is an 8x10 album that I will print through Blurb. I am attempting to use nothing by Traci Reed’s Weekender collection on my pages. This book covers the spring break Route 66 road trip that my daughter and I went on this past March. We both had our big cameras so I have tons of photos to work with and I really wanted to make them the focus of my pages.
For a minimalist album, I wanted a minimalist cover. I kept things simple with alphas, some paint and a couple of stickers…
First I want to talk about the different styles of page formats I use.
The left side of the spread below is a simple “pocket page” format with journaling cards - I’m using the “en route” card at the start of each day of our trip to record our starting and ending points. And on the right side, I let the photo be the star with just one coordinating sticker to record the location.
Some photos just had to be big in my album, I love spreading a photo across two pages! There’s enough going on in the photo below that a small piece of word art and some journaling do the trick.
And sometimes, there’s no photo at all. I love being able to include stories about our trip without needing a corresponding photo to go with it.
Here are a few of the tricks I use when putting together a minimalist style album:
Big photos - full page or two page spreads, let those photos shine!
Journal directly onto your photo in a dark or light space.
Not all photos are great, but contribute to your story. Small photos with lots of white space and some journaling make a nice contrast to full page photo pages.
When you have a lot of photos of one thing, pocket page style pages come together quickly with a clean design.
When picking elements to add to a page, I try to pick a color from the photo itself to highlight with an element (or two).
Other than that, I just try to remember that less is more and to keep it simple! I love making minimalist albums to mix in with my more traditional style scrapped albums. I love the variety. I hope you give minimalist pages a try too!
